The Top 50 Black Colleges - some nice surprises on the list

Wondering which universities made the top 50 list for historically black colleges and universities? Many of these institutions are highly ranked by US News & World Report. :-)

All of the top 50 black colleges share a similar history. Most HBCUs were established after the American Civil War. However, Cheyney University was established in 1837, Lincoln University was established in 1854, and Wilberforce University was established in 1856.  These three institutions were established for blacks prior to the American Civil War.

Those colleges that opened their doors to African Americans after the implementation of the Sweatt v. Painter and Brown v. Board of Education rulings by the U.S. Supreme Court are considered “predominantly black” and not a HBCU.  With the Morrill Act of 1890, HBCUs are given additional federal funding for their research, and with the Higher Education Act of 1965, a program was established to give direct federal grants and federal matching of private endowment contributions to HBCUs.

Protests & unrest have focused attention on colleges that have ties to Middle Eastern governments

Middle_east
Colleges rethink where they choose to get an influx of capital. They are not so sure about the ties they once thought of having with middle eastern countries. The unrest in these regions have reawakend concerns over foreign money.

In the summer of 2008, Lewis N. Walker, president of Lawrence Technological University, flew to Bahrain to deliver an honorary doctorate to Sheik Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa. The country's prime minister and crown prince was being honored for his support of a free-market economy and for "creating the infrastructure for an innovative and socially and environmentally sustainable society," according to a Lawrence Tech press release. The crown prince honored the university at about the same time with a $3-million donation.

These days, Bahrain may not look so socially sustainable. Soon after the demonstrations in Egypt, thousands of people marched to Pearl Square in Bahrain's capital city to protest the country's absolute monarchy, and were met with a brutal government response that so far has left several dead and hundreds wounded.

Here is a list of 30-plus distance learning accrediting agencies that claim to oversee a variety of online and distance learning college and university degree programs. Most "accredit" diploma mills or degree mills.

Consumers Beware - NONE of these accrediting agencies are recognized as college accreditors in the U.S. by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation or the U.S. Department of Education. As such, colleges claiming “accreditation” by these agencies are not accepted as valid providers of online education or degrees and should be approached with great caution if online college credibility is important to you.

Regional vs. National Accreditation: Which Is Better for Online Colleges?

Help! Comparing online colleges is an overwhelming task. I have a list of more than twenty possible colleges. I’m favoring one online university that is accredited by the Distance Education & Training Council (DETC). Is the DETC a valid accreditor? Will my online degree be widely recognized? My career counselor told me national accreditation (like the DETC) is not as good as regional accreditation. Which is best when it comes to online colleges: regional accreditation or national accreditation? And does it really make any difference?

Tips to Help Parents, Students Scope Out Colleges, Scholarships

Top_colleges_online
Here's a quick guide for parents and students to find the best colleges for their students.

As the mom of a high school sophomore, I'm beginning to realize that the tedious job of helping my daughter find a college and the resources to pay for that institution is one I can't start early enough.

After only a few hours of researching I realize that the whole college idea is a full-time job, one that doesn’t stop until your student is fully enrolled in his or her college career. There are three phases in the college process–standardized tests or entrance exams, choosing the college itself and finding a way to pay (i.e. scholarships).

Community College Get Creative in Rasing Funds

Online_colleges
Find out how Rural colleges low tuition by creative fund raising. This may mean lower tuition for students.

Editor’s note: This is an excerpt from an article in the February/March 2011 edition of the Community College Journal, the bimonthly magazine of the American Association of Community Colleges.

When administrators at California’s West Hills Community College (WHCC) District bandied about suggestions for a guest speaker to raise money toward construction of a new events center on the college’s Lemoore campus, one bold, if controversial, name rose to the top: Sarah Palin.

Love her or hate her, the high-profile politician would generate interest among potential givers, Squire thought. She was right: Tickets sold out before administrators announced Palin’s visit to the press.

A New Kind of College Education

Find out what the best colleges are trying to do to accommodate the online student. Best colleges online will help you decide.

Steve Forbes recently wrote about the U.S. system of higher education in an aptly titled piece, Dinosaur U. He was responding to Universities on the Brink. an article by Boston University School of Management Dean Emeritus Louis Lataif’. Both cite a looming education bubble, similar to the fun (for some) Dot Com bubble and not-so-fun (for just about everyone) housing bubble.

One takeaway from the two articles is the lack of ROI for the typical four-year college degree. Universities are in the midst of a brand crisis, trying to earn their premiums from a base of prospective clients that is beginning to ask hard questions.
