Virtual classrooms stay open even in worst weather

Virtual classrooms stay open even in worst weather. Even with the latest snow days shcools kept their classes going.

Blogs, podcasts and other tech tools are helping keep local kids "virtually" in class despite interruptions like recent snow days.

For instance, while ice was on the ground earlier this month, various Internet classes went on at Mary Institute St. Louis Country Day School in Ladue, even though the campus was closed.

Carla Federman, an Upper School history teacher, held an exam review session online for her AP U.S. history class.

The Best College Towns in America (some surprises here!)

Go ahead and admit it... we all love a good college town. You know the kind I'm talking about... pedestrian friendly streets, cafes (or bars) on every corner. Well, a new list of the Best College Towns in America has just been released:

What makes these towns the best collegiate towns? Is it the number of bars per capita? The number of museums, art galleries, coffee shops or used bookstores?

The main characteristic of a college town is that the college or university has a widespread impact on all aspects of life within that particular town. The city simply exists for the sake of the university. Therefore, yes, all of these cities are centers for the students that include coffee shops, eateries, and bars. Many of these cities also center on the athletic events of the particular college as well.

University Offering Community College Grads Discounted Tuition

[[posterous-content:pid___0]]

If you are a community college student, or are considering becoming one, this news is for you.

You are probably aware that many community colleges have transfer agreements with local universities to make it easy for you to transfer your associate's degree into a bachelor's degree program. The only problem is-- many students don't take advantage of these offers and leave college after earning their associate's degree.

Indiana Tech is making a bold move by offering LOWER TUITION RATES (unheard of these days) to students who enter into a transfer agreement with their university.

In an effort to help more degree seekers obtain higher education, a growing number of community colleges are creating transfer agreements with larger universities. These initiatives are designed to help associate's degree program graduates transition into bachelor's-level tracks.

Higher Ed Funding Cut by an Astounding $89 Billion Over 10 Years in Obama Budget

I have to admit that I am a little shocked by Obama's proposal to CUT higher education funding by $89 billion dollars. Really? Don't we have anything better to cut from the budget than education?

The funny thing is (not so funny), President Obama wants the United States to lead the world in college grads by 2020-- but how are we going to do that if funding is cut?

President Barack Obama, who has called for the U.S. to lead the world in college graduates by 2020, proposed budget cuts that would reduce support for higher education by $89 billion over 10 years.

Obama’s $77.4 billion spending proposal released today would cut a provision allowing some college students to get two Pell grants in a year and a program that lowers interest rates on loans for graduate students. The changes will reduce 2012 higher education outlays by $10 billion while raising spending for kindergarten through high school education 6.9 percent to $26.8 billion, the Education Department said.

Adult Students can now attend college without going to class

If you are an adult with adult responsibilities, the prospect of attending class on campus might seem impossible. After all, when working a full-time job, who has the time to commute to the college campus after work... let alone study when you get home at 10pm or later in the evening and have to wake up for work again in the morning.

More and more colleges are offering non-traditional programs to attract adult students...

Colleges and universities are responding by expanding evening classes, developing online curriculums and offering courses at satellite locations.

Evening classes are great, but I am more interested in online classes-- who wouldn't be? You make your own schedule and study when it's convenient for you (for me that would be on the weekend). Perhaps the best part is you don't have to give up going to any family functions or lose sleep. At the end of the day, the college degree you earn looks the same as someone sitting in class, so why not give it a try?

In an effort to prepare more adults for careers in this field, Grantham University recently announced in a press release that it will offer an online bachelor's degree in human resource management and an online master's degree in business intelligence.

Are you ready to attend College?

Now, more than ever, a college education is crucial for success. But are students across America ready for the challenge?
A story in the New York Times today states that
President Obama has made reducing the drop-out rate and increasing college and career preparedness a priority for his administration.
But is making career preparedness a priority realistic? With all the focus these days on standardized testing, one can only wonder how students could ever prepare for college -- how could they? They spend 50% of their time studying for state exams to graduate high school.
Obviously, this approach hasn't worked so far-- I think change is in order.
